BECOMING
A CNA
CNA
or
Certified Nursing Assistant (also known as Nurse Assistant) is a job in high
demand. CNAs work in hospitals and nursing
homes, but also serve private companies or work independently. The jobs
can be hard work, but you should consider this an opportunity to work in
a professional environment and also as a "stepping
stone" to other professions, e.g., licensed practical nurse (LPN)
or registered nurse (RN).
What is the
"inside track" to becoming a CNA? Normally, you are told you
must attend a school to study and pass a state examination. Many schools
offer programs for this purpose. This takes time and money! You may
possibly be exempted from the course on certain conditions.
Step
1. Contact the agency that runs your CNA program for your state to find
out their rules for education and testing.
Step
2. Take Practice Tests
- Check your
library for CNA guides
- Attend an
approved school (if mandatory).
- Check your
local bookstores. (see bottom page for ideas) The best
books come with CDROMs with practice tests. Take advantage of these.
Step
3. Apply for the exam.
- Find a
testing or training center. Some are shown below.
The
training schools charge from $300 up to $1600 for the CNA
state-approved course. This usually includes your books. Do you have
to take this course? That depends.
